TwitchCon is described as ‘an annual celebration of streamer culture and the Twitch community.” This year it will be hosted at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California from Oct. 26-28.
Twitchcon 2018 is right around the corner but it seems to be having some problems attendance-wise. After the horrific incident that happened in Jacksonville, Florida in August of this year where a shooting occurred after a player losing in the eSport event shot and killed two players and injured many more have raised concerns for streamers players and fans alike. This incident is forcing people to be more careful and even hesitant in attending events in the likes of eSport. Twitchcon seems to be getting the same effect and many people have gone to twitter to voice their concern and reluctancy of attending this year’s event.
Some high profile twitch streamers are on the fence in attending and some of these people are Ellohime who wrote on twitter: “I may not attend Twitchcon. This is a difficult decision (and I am still thinking hard on it) but I just wanted to get this out there.
Don’t feel safe in America.” After his initial tweet Ellohime went further in explaining his opinion on the issue. “at the end of the day, it’s a gaming convention. it’s a recreational event. I am not taking some huge stand against bullies or gun violence by showing up. I am simply looking at the situation reasonably, assessing the context and factors (like 3 eSports players getting laser beams pointed at their chest then filled with lead till they died and streamers houses being shot up, not to mention death threats I have received) and making the best decision possible.”
Others have rallied behind twitch and gave their opinions on the matter. Martyn Littlewood another known twitch streamer replied to Ellohime on twitter: “I’m Twitch’s defense though, I attended the first two Twitchcons and I remember they both had full bag checks to gain entry with no exceptions. Having said that I’ve been steering clear of cons this year partly for security reasons so I totally get it.”
With all the opinions in mind twitch as countermeasure to assure and reassure people, shared its security plans for the event. “Our highest priority at TwitchCon is attendees’ safety and security. We want to assure you that we are adding additional security measures on top of the past event measures. We will have more detailed information on TwitchCon security in the coming days so stay tuned!” Tweeted twitch, and a few days later shared a link with detailed information about their security measures. Hopefully the event will go smoothly and everyone enjoys it with no problem at all.
